As flash drive capacity continues to increase, the switch from FAT32 to NTFS drive formatting is becoming more common. NTFS format offers better reliability, faster read/write speeds, better security and better compatibility with any computer with an NTFS formatted drive. Any drives over 32GB in capacity must use the NTFS format to function properly with Windows-based computers.

Instructions

Insert the flash drive into an available USB port on your computer. Wait for the drive to appear on your desktop. Double click on it to open a new window. Right click and click "Select All" followed by "Copy."

Right click on the desktop and select "New" followed by "Folder." Double click on the "folder" to open it and right click inside. Select "Paste." This will move any of your files from the flash drive to the computer to prevent data loss when converting the flash drive to NTFS.

Right click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop followed by "Manage." Locate the entry for "Disk Drives" and click on it once to expand the list of drives.

Right click on the "USB drive" listed followed by "Properties." Click the "Policies" tab and select the option for "Optimize for Performance." Click on "OK."

Double click on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop. Locate the USB drive in the list of drives and right click on it. Select "Format" from the list that appears.

Click the "Drop down menu text box" under "File System." Click on the "Start" option at the bottom of the "Format" window.

Click "OK" when the formatting is finished. Left-click on the folder you created in Step 2 and while holding down the left mouse button drag the folder over the "USB drive" icon on the desktop and release the button.

Wait for the file transfer screen to disappear before proceeding. Right click the "USB icon" and select "Eject" from the options. Wait a few seconds before pulling the flash drive out of the USB port.
