How to Test an Armature Briggs & Stratton

Briggs & Stratton produce a range of engines for generators and power washers but most commonly for lawn mowers. Its modern engines contain solid-state ignition armatures that are mounted adjacent to the flywheel. If you suspect there is a problem with your armature, the electromagnetic device that produces the spark required to start your Briggs & Stratton combustion engine, you should test it before attempting to replace it. There are a number of issues that might be causing your motor not to start

Instructions

        Disconnect the spark plug cable.

        Remove any debris from around the spark plug and wipe the surrounding area with a small amount of alcohol rub on a cloth. This will ensure that nothing gets into the combustion chamber when the spark plug is removed.

Lower the spark plug socket over the spark plug and rotate in a counterclockwise motion to remove it. Clean the spark plug using the wire brush and the spray-on cleaner. Use the knife to remove any deposits in the spark plug housing.

Replace the spark plug, taking care not to over-tighten, and reattach the spark plug lead.

Connect the spark plug lead to the long terminal of the tester and use the tester's alligator clip to ground to the engine. The alligator clip should be connected to one of the bolts on the engine itself.

Start the engine using the rewind or electric starter and look for a spark in the window of the tester. The absence of a visible spark indicates a problem with the ignition armature. If there is a problem with your motor's armature, you should contact your local Briggs & Stratton authorized dealer to find a replacement for your model. An ignition armature must be set at a precise distance from the flywheel to work properly.


Tips & Warnings

    Make sure that your motor is turned off and that you have disconnected the spark plug cable before attempting to carry out any tests on your motor.
