How to Format a 128GB Flash Drive

Windows 7 simplifies the formatting procedure for 128GB flash drives, with the only real issue being the file system you should choose. This depends on how you will use the drive. The FAT32 file system is by far the most compatible since it can be used in almost all operating systems and devices, but individual file sizes are limited to just 4GB. NTFS offers greater security and data recovery, but has limited support outside Windows. The newest system, exFAT, is still in its infancy. Although it offers some speed advantages, it is largely unusable outside Windows 7, Vista and XP.

Vizio Blu-ray players feature USB drives that allow you to view digital photos and listen to your digital music collection right on your TV. Because the feature is native to the Blu-ray, you do not need to perform any upgrades to the firmware or changes to the device's settings to get the Blu-ray player to read the files on the flash drive. The USB drive must be formatted to the FAT32 storage type to be compatible with the Vizio. Instructions 1 Plug the USB end of the flash drive into an open USB port on your computer. Click the Windows orb and click "Computer." 2 Right-click the "USB Drive" icon in the window that appears and click "Format." Click the "Format Type" menu and click "FAT32." Plug the USB drive into the computer. Ubuntu should mount the device automatically. If no volume appears under the /media directory continue to Step 2.

Click on Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal.

Find your device in the list. It will look something like: /dev/sdb1

Type "sudo mkdir /media/external" into the terminal window and hit the enter key.

If the filesystem is formatted as FAT16 or FAT32, type "sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /media/external -o uid=1000,gid=100,utf8,dmask=027,fmask=137" into the terminal window, and hit the enter key. Otherwise, if the device is formatted with NTFS, type "sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 /media/external" and hit the enter key.

To unmount the device, type "sudo umount /media/external" into the terminal window and hit the enter key.

How to Fix Windows XP From a Flash USB

While Windows XP's installation CD can repair certain registry or system errors, if a trojan or virus has infected your computer and is preventing it from running properly, your Windows XP CD's repair utility can only do so much. To fix Windows XP, you will need to create a bootable disk installed with an antivirus software.

In the past, boot disks were created using either a CD, DVD or floppy disk. Now, however, with the development of external drives, computers can boot from a USB flash drive. USB flash drives are more convenient than most other removable media because they are smaller and contain more drive space. Making a bootable USB drive to fix Windows XP can be a complicated, drawn-out process, so it's important to have plenty of time available to create the drive.

Instructions

Access your BIOS setup screen. Check the drive priority menu to see whether or not you can boot from USB. If the option is not there, an update to the BIOS firmware may allow you to boot to USB. Contact your motherboard's manufacturer for further assistance.

Check your USB drive's documentation to confirm that it can be used as a bootable drive. While most USB drives can be used this way, older or cheaper USB drives may not have that functionality.

Download and run "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool." Select your USB drive, choose the FAT file option, then click "Start" to format your USB drive.

Right-click "Start," then click "Explore." Click "Tools" from the menu bar, then click "Folder Options." Click the "View" tab, then check "Show hidden files and folders." Click "OK."

Click the "C:" drive. Hold down "CTRL" then click the "boot.ini," "ntldr" and "ntdetect" files. Press "CTRL" and "C" simultaneously, then navigate to your flash drive. Press "CTRL" and "P" simultaneously to paste these files into your drive. Do not close Explorer.

Download, install and run PEBuilder so that you can create a bootable copy of the Windows XP OS. Insert your Windows XP CD into an available CD or DVD drive.

Download a copy of AVG AntiVirus 7.0 and install it to your computer, then download the AVG AntiVirus plugin. Click "Plugins" on the PEBuilder application, then click "Add." Locate your AVG AntiVirus plugin, click it, then click "Open."

Return to Explorer. Copy all of the files from your AVG AntiVirus 7.0 program folder to the new AVG AntiVirus plugin folder. Your AVG AntiVirus plugin folder should be located in your PEBuilder program folder.

Restart PEBuilder. Click the "Plugins" option, then click "AVG Antivirus" from the list. Click "Enable."

Select your Windows XP Installation CD as the source drive, if it is not automatically selected already. Write down the location of the "Output" folder so that you can locate it later in Explorer. In the "Media Output" section, click "None."

Click "Build." Once the boot disk files have been generated, locate your "Output" folder and copy all of the files to your USB drive.

Restart your computer. Access the BIOS setup utility and change the drive boot priority so that your USB drive boots first. Consult your computer's manual or contact your motherboard's manufacturer if you are not sure how to do this.

Restart your computer again. The computer should boot Windows XP using the USB flash drive. Run the AVG Antivirus application and perform a full scan on your computer to remove any viruses or other infections that are preventing Windows XP from running properly.

How to Change the Write-Protect on a Flash Drive

If you have a write-protected flash drive that you need to access, it can be difficult to change it to allow you access, especially if it is a security-optimized flash drive. However, there are a few practical steps you can take to change the write-protection on a flash drive. Instructions 1 Check for a write-protection switch. This switch, when engaged, will lock the contents of the flash drive and is a very common security feature. It is generally located on the side of the flash drive, and has an "enabled" or "on" position, and an "off" position. Slide this into the "off" position. 2 Override password security. If your flash drive has password security, but you have forgotten the code, you can try to override the security feature by going to the Start menu and selecting "Run." A dialogue box will pop up, into which you should type in the path to the file on the USB drive you want to access. Note: This only works on USB drives with very simple security. A status bar will pop up. How to Partition & Format a USB Flash Drive Partitioning a flash drive means that you divide the drive's memory into separate sections. This allows for separate storage areas for different files in the same way that it would on a computer hard drive. You must download a program that partitions the flash drive so that it can then be formatted using those partitions. Instructions Partitioning the Flash Drive 1 Install the USB drive utility, then connect your flash drive to the computer. Launch the USB drive utility and click "Flip Removable bit." Remove the flash drive safely and then re-insert it. The computer now sees the device as a fixed storage device rather than removable. 2 Right-click "My Computer" and select "Manage" from the list.
